HISTORY OF LANHAM MACHINERY CO. INC., ATLANTA, GEORGIA

Lanham Machinery Co. Inc. introduced in 1967, an innovative conveyorised final cooler-oven-cooler system - "Proof and Bake" - in which the product - bread in straps of six tins or rolls on baking sheets - were carried through all three processes on a system of spiral conveyors. They competed directly, and quite successfully, for large automatic bread plant orders with Baker Perkins Inc in North America, Baker Perkins Ltd in Europe , Scandinavia, Africa and the Middle East and Baker Perkins Pty in Australia and the Far East. Sales of Lanham equipment in the area covered by Baker Perkins Ltd were handled by Tweedy of Burnley from the early 1980s.

As part of the strategy to support the new group's growth strategy in the bakery machinery market, Lanham was acquired by APV in 1989 for £3.6M. The acquisition was not entirely successful - a number of Lanham employees left the company to set up in competition - and the company was moved from Atlanta and consolidated into the existing bakery machinery facility in Goldsboro, NC in 1991.
